Multisport Coaching

Beginners

Our beginner coaching sessions provide an introduction to paddling and are targeted at those who are interested in getting involved in recreational paddling, or competitive events such as the Classic River Race or the Coast to Coast. You must be over 15 years of age to attend. We do ask that beginners are able to swim and have a reasonable level of water confidence, to the extent that they can get to the bank in the event of capsize.

If your interest is in getting involved in competitive sprint K1 paddling, (what you see at the Olympics), or relate to a junior paddler of under 15 years of age, this is not the session for you. Contact coaching@arawa.org.nz for further information if your interest lies in one of these areas and we will direct you to an appropriate coach.

Arawa Beginner Sessions include:
• A tour of the club facilities
• Education around safety and the rules of the Avon River (lifejackets must be worn by beginners – no exceptions)
• Instruction in the selection and use of club equipment
• Instruction in basic paddling technique
• An onwater lesson – Sessions are held wet or fine. If conditions do not permit getting on the water, the lesson may be conducted upstairs at the club using the paddling ergometers.

Paddles, kayaks, and lifejackets are provided by the club. The rules are “first in first served” with regard to equipment, so get in early on the day. Please refer to our club website https://www.arawa.org.nz/coaching.html#sessions for more details of what you should wear/bring with you.
